A train ferry is a ship designed to carry railway vehicles. Typically, one level of the ship is fitted with railway tracks, and the ship has a door at the front and/or rear to give access to the wharves.

The wharf (sometimes called a "slip") has a ramp or linkspan that connects the railway proper to the ship, allowing for the water level to rise and fall with the tides. For an example of a specialized slip to receive railcars see ferry slip.

While railway vehicles can and are shipped on the decks or in the holds of ordinary ships, purpose-built train ferries are much quicker to load and unload, especially as several vehicles can be loaded or unloaded at once.

世界铁路轮渡现状

　　自19世纪中叶英国费思湾诞生第一条铁路轮渡以来的近一个半世纪时间内，铁路轮渡运输在世界上许多国家不断得到重视和发展。据不完全统计，目前世界各国通航运营的铁路轮渡有七八十条，航线总长约1.4万公里，其中跨海轮渡航线50多条，其余为沿江或跨江、河、湖泊的航线。

　　世界各国的铁路轮渡线，主要集中在欧洲波罗的海、北海、黑海、里海及地中海地区，北美的太平洋、大西洋沿岸及大湖区。按各大洲分布，大约是欧洲占45%、北美占30%，亚洲及南太平洋地区占25%。我国铁路轮渡发展历史很长，1949年以前，长江上曾有武汉、南京两座火车轮渡，是英国人设计的。1957年10月武汉长江大桥率先建成通车，武汉火车轮渡停摆。1968年9月，南京长江大桥建成通车，南京火车轮渡停摆。2002年11月21日，新长铁路的组成部分——江阴火车轮渡通过国家验收，这是我国自行设计的长江第一座火车轮渡。2003年1月7日，中国第一条跨海轮渡——跨越琼州海峡的粤海铁路通道轮渡正式开通。
